Course content

Strategic alignment
As most organisations are resource limited, projects worked on should be prioritised to ensure the greatest benefits are gained for the resources expended. This section will consider how projects can be prioritised, and introduce the concept of a framework in which projects can be managed to suit individual organisations.

Here, you will learn the following:

  • Explain how business projects should originate
  • Commence to construct a project management framework best suited to your organisation.
  • Discuss the impact of resource availability on project selection.

Project definition
Definition will ensure the "goal posts" are clearly identified which helps prevent wasting resources, frustrating project participants and disappointing the project client or other key stakeholders.

This section will enable you to:

  • Write an outcome statement
  • Identify project requirements and associated performance criteria
  • Discuss the roles and responsibilities of people involved in projects
  • Describe the factors to be considered when selecting a project team
  • Explain the importance of project sign-off.

Plan and schedule development
Once the project outcome is defined, the project manager must have a clear understanding of the tasks required to achieve the outcome, their associated resources and when those tasks should be undertaken. This section provides techniques to accomplish these activities.

Hence, you will be able to:

  • Identify tasks using a work breakdown structure (WBS)
  • Complete action plans
  • Construct a basic network diagram and Gantt Chart
  • Determine the project budget
  • Write preventative and contingent scenarios for significant project risks

Management and monitoring
To be able to achieve the project outcome, the project manager must prepare for start-up of project operations, establish a project information system and action the project plan.

Upon completion of this section, you should be able to:

  • Discuss the elements required for "start-up"
  • Determine information systems requirements
  • Discuss the requirements to action the project plan
  • Explain the importance of project sign-off

Decommissioning and transition
The decommissioning and transition of a project is a necessary phase in the project’s finite life. As with the other steps, the decommissioning and transition should be planned, monitored and controlled. The project will conclude when the project outcome and associated requirements have been achieved.

Hence, you will learn how to:

  • Identify requirements to phase-out the project
  • Discuss the value of reviewing the project management framework

Learning outcomes

  • Understand how project management can be used to achieve business goals
  • Appreciate the critical success factors in achieving project outcomes
  • Participate in project teams and appreciate the need for teamwork and the roles and responsibilities involved
