EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION, NEGOTIATION AND MEDIATION
INTRODUCTION
This unit assumes some understanding of effective communication skills, and will build on these to explore approaches to effectively managing and resolving conflict.
The unit will cover:
- Analysing the nature and causes of conflict
- An assessment of personal styles of responding to conflict
- Approaches to resolving conflict with a focus on negotiation and mediation
- Practical application, for example through role play, in relation to managing and resolving conflict between members of the public, developers, and planning authorities in relation to development applications as well as policy and strategic planning processes.
UNIT OUTCOMES
At the completion of this unit, participants should be able to:
- Gained an understanding of, and the ability to analyse, the causes of a conflict and appropriate ways of addressing these
- Reflected on personal styles (including your own) of responding to conflict
- Learnt about various approaches to resolving conflicts with a focus on principled negotiation and mediation
- Explored and practised skills required for effective negotiation and mediation
- Reflected on the practical application of conflict resolution processes in your workplace.
