This course is designed as part of the Planning Institute of Australia's (PIA) Certified Practising Planners program which was introduced in July 2006 and aims to improve planner's knowledge about the economics of development within Australia and other countries. The strategic intent of the course is to enable participants to develop an appreciation of the relationship between planning and the economics of development and to develop new skills and ideas which you can apply as a planner to your work. The course uses different methods of instruction and will involve a mixture of theory, practice and the application of economic tools and approaches used to support economic development. There will be opportunities to participate in discussions. One session will include a presentation on a local development project. There will be an assessment, which must be completed six weeks after completing the course. You must pass the assessment before this course can be credited as part of your CPP certification.
The notes in the course manual are extensive and written for web based learning. The manual therefore has more information than would be provided for a two day course. It is not expected that participants will have a detailed knowledge of economics or development.
