Effective asset management ensures that assets continue to provide value throughout the asset life cycle at minimum cost of ownership and are consistent with commercial and risk management strategies.

The Challenge - Providing Capability and Value
Introduces the concept of Asset Capability, which is dependent on performance, reliability, maintainability and sustainability. This section covers the following:

  • Strategic asset management – definition & aims
  • The essence of capability and value
  • Options for providing capability and value

The Journey - Strategic Asset Management
Introduces the Strategic Asset Management Process, which embraces time, cost and risk management overlays. Modules include the following:

  • Strategic asset management processes/interrelationships
  • Conception
  • Process inputs, outputs, overlays
  • Purpose of asset management plan

The Milestones - Asset Management Life Cycle
A closer look at the capability requirements and of the activities that need to be addressed within the progressive phases of asset management along with associated milestones and key deliverable are addressed here in the following sections:

  • Asset capability
  • Asset management life cycle processes
  • Milestones and key deliverables

The Approaches - Think beyond the obvious
This section gives an overview on approaches when contemplating how to best provide a required capability. The following topics are discussed:

  • Preserving and/or enhancing the asset
  • Influencing needs, demand and expectations
  • Challenging asset assumptions, solutions and practices
  • Discovering better asset solutions

The vehicle – asset management plan [part 1]
A 2-part introduction into what an asset management plan is and what it entails. This section comprises of the following:

  • Purpose of the asset management plan
  • Asset management planning concepts
  • Key parts of an asset management plan
  • Compiling an asset management plan

The vehicle – asset management plan [part 2]
Continuation from the previous section, a round up, which basically elaborates on compiling an asset management plan. Here, the two elements: Strategic Perspective and System Analysis, are combined to produce and define clear objectives for the Tactical Plan.

The measures – operational systems effectiveness
This section reviews the requirements of operational systems effectiveness, its measurement and the challenges confronting organisations to manage the growth of systems effectiveness to new target levels. It is thus divided into:

  • A model for operational asset effectiveness
  • Measuring plant performance

The new capability – embracing new technology
This final section wraps up with a discussion on issues concerning how well new technology is addressed and how well their total demands are integrated into a coherent whole. It is divided into the following topics:

  • Management issues and technology management
  • Other considerations in the adoption of new technology
  • Characteristics of best practice new technology adoption firms
